Why Sidecars:
Having watched Tom Hanks and Phil Biggs race
at world level the sidecar bug bit hard and I was
given the opportunity, by father in law Ken smith,
to try it out.
I used to play rugby at a fairly competitive level
(Welsh National) and picked up a serious ankle injury
which marked the end of my playing days. Being competitive
by nature this high adrenalin sport was just the thing
I was looking for. We conducted a test at Darley Moor
just to see what it was like and immediately felt
comfortable with Craig at the controls so we decided
to take the plunge and see how we got on.
During 2003 we entered three race meetings and under
the coaching of Tom Hanks we improved each time out
on the track. The ASCO outfit we used was perfect
as a learning tool but was beginning to show signs
that we had developed beyond its capabilities and
was limiting us and a more competitive outfit was
required.
Most memorable sidecar racing
experience to date
Racing at the festival of sidecars 2003 we were overtaken
by Steve Abbott going into the chicane and then undertaken
by Klaus Klaffenbock at the same time. Upon exiting
the chicane Steve Webster overtook through devils
elbow, the whole experience was awesome, not only
being on the same circuit as the best in the world
but seeing how fast you could go through that section
was amazing and will remain with me forever.
Philosophy to racing
Our primary goal for each race is to finish. We focus
on what we are doing and learn about each other -
finding our strengths and weaknesses then working
on them.
2004 will be a big learning curve as we will be visiting
new circuits and although we know we wont be fighting
for podium places we know that we will make our mark
amongst the mid field runners.
